How is Lucca?
Q. I want to go to Italy some time, and i heard about a charming town called Lucca. It's sparked a bit of interest. What's it like there?

A. Lucca is a city in Tuscany, northern central Italy, situated on the river Serchio in a fertile plain near (but not on) the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is the capital city of the Province of Lucca. Among other reasons, it is famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls (although the city has expanded beyond the wall's boundaries). Lucca was founded by the Etruscans (there are traces of a pre-existing Ligurian settlement) and became a Roman colony in 180 BC. The rectangular grid of its historical center preserves the Roman street plan, and the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum. Traces of the amphitheatre can still be seen in the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. The walls around the old town remained intact as the city expanded… [cont.]

Lucca and Pisa Italy?
Q. I am taking a meditterenean cruise in October - one of our ports is Livorno. I would like to take a day trip from Livorno to Pisa and Lucca, spending most of the time in Lucca. Any ideas about how to book the train? or bus? Should I do that before I leave the states or just do it on that day at the station? Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

A. Pisa is 15 minutes train far from Livorno and Lucca is 20-25 minutes train far from Pisa. They're mainly linked by regional trains (on this type of train is not possible to make seat reservation) with easy and frequent connections. See time table on this link All what you've to do is to go Livorno's railway station, buy the ticket there, stamp it at the yellow machines and hop on the first train to Pisa. After having visited Pisa (the leaning tower is not too far from the station) you can do the same to go to Lucca and then back to Livorno. Take care of buying separate tickets from Livorno to Pisa and from Pisa to Lucca to allow you Pisa's visit (stamp validity is just a few hours).
