Lucca was founded by the Etruscans (there are traces of a pre-existing Ligurian settlement) and became a Roman colony in 180 BC. The rectangular grid of its historical center preserves the Roman street plan, and the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum. Traces of the amphitheatre can still be seen in the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. They're mainly linked by regional trains (on this type of train is not possible to make seat reservation) with easy and frequent connections. See time table on this link All what you've to do is to go Livorno's railway station, buy the ticket there, stamp it at the yellow machines and hop on the first train to Pisa. After having visited Pisa (the leaning tower is not too far from the station) you can do the same to go to Lucca and then back to Livorno. Take care of buying separate tickets from Livorno to Pisa and from Pisa to Lucca to allow you Pisa's visit (stamp validity is just a few hours).
