From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A glass is an amorphous (non-crystalline) solid material. Glasses are typically brittle, and often optically transparent. Glass is commonly used for windows, bottles, modern hard drives and eyewear, and examples of glassy materials include soda-lime glass, borosilicate glass, acrylic glass, sugar glass, Muscovy-glass, and aluminium oxynitride. The term glass developed in the late Roman Empire. It was in the Roman glassmaking center at Trier, now in modern Germany, that the late-Latin term glesum originated, probably from a Germanic word for a transparent, lustrous substance. Strictly speaking, a glass is defined as an inorganic product of fusion which has been cooled through its glass transition to the solid state without crystallising. Many glasses contain silica as their main component and glass former. The term "glass" is, however, often extended to all amorphous solids (and melts that easily form amorphous solids), including plastics, resins, or other silica-free amorphous solids. In addition, besides traditional melting techniques, any other means of preparation are considered, such as ion implantation, and the sol-gel method. Commonly, and physics deal only with inorganic amorphous solids, while plastics and similar organics are covered by polymer science, biology and further scientific disciplines. Glass plays an essential role in science and industry. The optical and physical properties of glass make it suitable for applications such as flat glass, container glass, optics and optoelectronics material, laboratory equipment, thermal insulator (glass wool), reinforcement fiber (glass-reinforced plastic, glass fiber reinforced concrete), and art. GNU Free Documentation License What type of seal works on custom glass showers to seal between glass door and glass wall when door is closed? Q. I recently bought a home with a custom glass shower. There is a small gap between the edge of the swinging glass door and the glass wall. What type of seal or gasket do I use to prevent water from leaking out? Also there are three metal hinges that connect the door to the marble wall, but there are also gaps between the glass and the Marble where there are not hinges. What type of flexible seal/gasket would I use here? Q. Does anyone know which is better in terms of pollution, including carbon dioxide produced? Please consider the entire process, incluing producing the glass, washing the glass (including detergents and water purification), compared to producing the plastic, and recycling/disposing of both glass and plastic. Please also consider (if possible) that a glass milk bottle cannot be reused indefinitely (it may become chipped or be dropped and broken, or just get old). I would like to know if it is justifiable to pay more for glass bottle milk delivery in terms of environmental friendliness. Asked by John - Sun Mar 25 10:49:11 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes, it is justificable to pay more for glass bottle milk delivery. The glass bottle is definitely better than plastic bottle. If milk is carried in a plastic bottle, it dissolves very little amount of plastic which may be harmful to the human body ( every liquid can dissolve some part of a solid which is kept in it). For this reason, food items are never carried in plastic bags. The glass bottle can be used over again and again and it does less environmental degradation than a plastic bottle. The glass bottle , if broken , can be sent for recycling. But a platis bottle shall have to be disposed off and nothig can be done to it. If we view in terms of the glass bottle breaking, chipping off or breaking , then I suggest you to choose such… [cont.] Answered by Satya - Sat Mar 31 23:50:09 2007 How big is a glass of water, when thinking about 8 glasses of water per day?
